First game of the
year for the society, threatening clouds up above, a superb line
up of players with handicaps ranging from 9 to 25, 9 guests and
11 members, all to play for. On this occasion we were playing off
¾ of our handicaps, making us work just a little harder. As it happens,
though it rained a little at times, it wasn't as bad as it could
have been, and certainly didn't dampen our spirits. Tough conditions
as ever as the wind was pretty strong, so the scene is set.
I was playing with 3 guests I had brought from Corralejo, a father,
son and brother-in-law. I must say I had a fabulous day in their
company. The son, James who has only been playing golf for a couple
of years and was playing off 13, had a superb swing and could hit
the ball for miles as could his dad Jim, a real pleasure to watch.
Of course this doesn't take away the fact that it's a very tricky
and unforgiving golf course especially when the wind was blowing
as it was.

Also playing
on the day were several of our regular guests who were here on the
island. Mike Minihayne, Simon Wrigley (Alan’s son) Gareth
Davies to mention but a few. Putting in a sterling performance was
member Alan Wrigley’s son, Simon. Playing off ¾ of
a 12 handicap, (9 shots) he came in with 36 points, a round of 79!
Some of the professionals didn’t manage that in the Spanish
Open in April 2004. Needless to say that was enough to win the members
comp, but not far behind was Bill Blundle playing off ¾ of
9 and coming in with 31.
In the members comp it was a close run battle with a 3-way tie for
2nd place. Dave Cooper, Paul Benham and 10 handicapper Dermott Haughian,
all came in with 32 points off a ¾ handicaps, but the winner
of the day with 33 points, was Dennis May who is this years vice
captain. Handicaps will be adjusted accordingly as the 6 monthly
assessment is now due.
The 2’s
comp, for anyone who gets a birdie on a par 3, was a rollover from
our Christmas bash and was offering a cash prize of 78 euro. This
was one by a guest, Mick Mac, who didn’t have the greatest
overall round (23 points off a 9 handicap), but I don’t think
he really cared after scooping the 2’s for a birdie on the
par three 15th! Nearest the pins were on the 4th and the 15th, Simon
Wrigley got the 4th and despite getting the birdie on the 15th,
Mick Mac was not the nearest to the pin, Dermott Haughian was. This
does beg the question, what happened to your birdie on the 15th
Dermott?! The lucky winner of the 50 euro sweepstake, was one of
my guests, Jim Deacon who picked Dennis May to be the winner of
the day.
