It may have been, 6th of the 6th '06, but nothing was
going to spoil such a beautiful day. A few had to pull out last
minute due to illness, but we still had 25 players including 7 guests,
a few of them regulars like, Big Nige, Brian Lees and Alan Salisbury.
They were over-seeding the greens on the front 9 so we had to play
the back 9 twice. It meant we had the hill on the17th to climb twice
but I think I prefer that to playing the 2nd and 8th twice!
My playing partners were all guests, Big Nige, Brian
Lees and Pete McVoy. Nige and Brian are both regulars in the bar
I work in, and Pete has been going in to Rogues Gallery where he
found out about the golf from our president, Derek. We had a really
pleasant round in good company, and the pace of the filed was perfect,
everyone had a bit of space without being held up or pushed from
behind.
On this occasion we were holding our presentation at
the Fuerteventura Golf Club, instead of the Kings Arms, because
we were invited to see the new course next door, Las Salinas, which
is due to open late July. I have been negotiating terms and conditions
for the society with the new course over the last few weeks. It
looks to be a very interesting course to play and some of the things
they have planned will be fantastic for golf on the island. More
information on the new course will be revealed as and when I get
it.

Anyway, back to the golf on the day. I had arranged for a bit of food to nibble on at the end of the game, so once everyone had finished their nibbles, we gave out the results. A really close finish, with only 5 points separating the top 7 in the members comp. In 3rd place was this years Captain Rob Hughes, with 36 points. Maybe it was because he didn't have to play host in his own bar!? Yet again a card play-off, this time it was to determine the winner. Both Dennis "the menace" McKernon and ex-captain Coops came in with 37 points. Dennis scored 21 points the first time round, but on a back 9 play-off, Coops scored 18 second time around, 2 more than Dennis to claim victory on the day. This means that both will be cut by 2 shots as they both score 30 points towards our player of the year comp. They needn't fear, because our six monthly handicap revise is coming up after our next game on June 20th.

Nearest the
pins were on the first time round on both par 3's, the 12th and
15th. It was very nearly a hole in 1 for Billy Seaforth on the 12th.
Just a few feet away from the pin, Billy also managed to birdie
to win him the 2's comp as well! Apparently Billy said the same
as me on the 12th tee, "Anywhere on the green will probably win
it" as the tees were right back and the wind was blowing from right
to left and a little in your face. The 15th was won by guest and
playing partner, Pete McVoy, who beat me by just 1 foot. His shot
won deservedly as his went in the air and straight on the green
where as mine went in the bunker and came out near the pin, local
knowledge I'll have you know to use that bunker! The sweep was won
yet again (about 3rd or 4th time now) by Lynden Bartlam, who incidentally
had his best round so far with 33 points, he is going to be a danger
in the very near future. Our winning guest was Steve Roberts who
scored a massive 37 points off an 11 handicap. It's not very often
guests' play to their handicap on this course, so well done Steve.
Our knockout
individual match play games are now underway with the qualifying
round this month, I will let you know results of this as they happen
