Due to necessary maintenance,
the front nine was closed to dress the greens, meaning we had to
play the back nine twice. In some ways that's not so bad as it means
it takes the dreaded eighth hole out of the equation and we would
have two goes at every hole for our eclectic scores, but what it
does mean is that you've got to walk cardiac hill (the 17th) twice!
The score cards show it was a lot easier going the first
time round, less wind and not quite as hot, by the second time round
the wind had picked up and we were facing temperatures in excess
of 26ºC, it was 29ºC when I reached my car after the game.
For the first
time this year, the winning score was less than 36, meaning no one
managed to play to their handicap, and we had a wide range of handicaps
from as low as 5 up to 35. The winner on this event was Dennis "the
menace" McKernon who came in with a very respectable 35 points meaning,
that according to our rules set at the beginning of the year, he
only gets docked one shot as he didn't play to his handicap, he
will now play off 17. In second place was yours truly with 34 points,
and our guest winner, also with 34 points off a handicap of 5, shooting
a gross round of 77 was Steve Bennett. Believe me, on a day like
we had these are pretty good scores. Picking the winner in the sweepstake
was Pete Thomas of About Cars in Parque Holandes. Nearest the pins
were on both par threes of the back nine, the long par three 12th,
and the usual 15th. Winner on the 12th was guest Steve Bennett,
and on the 15th John Gibson. But it proved to be all too much for
John Gibson who stayed at the presentation a little longer than
he anticipated! (See pic) No one managed a birdie on the par 3's,
so the "2's" competition will be a double rollover for next event.
So its a rollover
carried onto the Broncemar Cup on mid-summers day.
The prize for the 2's is an estimated 160 Euro!! We also have many
other special things lined up for our 2nd Major of the year. This
is the 2nd event sponsored by the Broncemar Beach Apartments
in Caleta de Fuste. Defending his title is Paul Worrall
(Egor) who won last year event with 40 points. Paul hasn't played
much this year, but is still full of confidence to retain his title.
He is however, going to have some stiff competition though, already
we have nearly 30 competitors for the day. Still room for some more
though, so if you want to take part in the golf in the day and/or
the evening presentation meal being held in Caleta de Fuste please
get in contact with me, Dave Brown on (0034) 620 161360,
