Corralejo Golf Society, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

After what looked like rain first thing in the morning, it turned out to be another glorious day weather wise. The sun is so strong it burns through by about 10.30am. Thankfully we were going out as 3 balls to make the round a little quicker.   Accompanying me were two guests who are regulars at the Talk of the town, Dave Keenen and Gary Charnock. Dave, who hasn't been playing long, had a great round enough in fact to win the guest prize with a score of 34 points. Considering the winning score of our members was 36, that's quite impressive. Dave did have a memorable 4th hole though, being a par 3 nearest the pin, he tried a little too hard to get there and did an air shot! But followed it up by putting it just 6 feet from the hole with his 2nd shot and putting it in for a par! He could've had nearest the pin and a share of the 2's! On only their 3rd game of the year, Andy and Elaine Knapman joined us.

Winners Elaine Knapman and runner-up Rob Hughes

"Hair-brain" Elaine playing along-side Jo McKernon and Jo Roaden was the victor of the day with 36 points. This means of course she's docked 2 shots! In 2nd with 35 points was Rob Hughes who also won the rolled over 2's comp with a birdie on the 4th hole. Jo Roaden came 3rd. Nearest the pins were Jo McKernon on the 4th and Dave Hill on the 15th.

We are welcoming 2 new members to the society this week, Keith Hughes who played as guest on our last match and 5 handicapper and previous guest Steve Bennett are joining the ranks. A warm welcome to them both.

Guest winner Dave Keenen and nearest the pin winner Jo McKernon

We are also very proud to have flown the flag for our society on the Spanish Golf Federation competition sponsored by Baku, the company that own the water park, market, driving range etc. in Corralejo. Paul Benham won the 18-28 handicap section and Jo McKernon with a gross round of 78 won the scratch to 18 handicap and overall honour of the competition. The reason Baku sponsored the day was to inaugurate their new driving range, practice area, target golf in the water park. To celebrate this they not only sponsored the day at the golf course, but also held a target golf competition in the evening. As I was working that evening I asked to go early in the competition. I actually ended up going 1st! The idea of the competition was you have ten balls that you have to get in a target 80 metres away. The bull's-eye red section is worth 50 points, the yellow 30 and the outside white area is worth 10 points. With 2 bulls, a yellow and 2 whites, I got a score of 150. As I was 1st off, I thought it was a fairly average score but it turned out I came 2nd and Dave Hill 3rd out of about 60 competitors! So if you're coming to Corralejo, we now have a place where you have a bit of a swing, though not long (150m) its still somewhere to have a practice.

Don’t forget our next event is on Tuesday, 19th July. Tee times are from 10.40 am followed by Tuesday 2nd August.
