Yet another great turnout for the society with a total
of 24 members and 9 guests playing on the day. Amongst the guests
there were a few familiar faces like Gareth Davies, Steve Pew and
Barbara Hoskinson (Margot Kenny's sister). I was out with 2 of the
other guests, twins from Leicester Phil and Matt along with Terry
Blood the flying Scotsman, and flying he was on the day too!
As we had a big turnout we sent a few groups off the 10th
to help us all finish within a closer time of each other. The greens
on the back 9 had been spiked and redressed with sand the week before,
so were running a little slower than usual. They will be doing the
greens on the front 9 next week to avoid causing too much inconvenience
to our society matches.

I mentioned before a certain flying Scotsman. Terry Blood has been with the society since the end of our first year, and is a pretty good golfer for a 28 handicap, but only has flashes of brilliance and rarely comes into contention for the main competitions, he does get the odd nearest the pin and wins the occasional sweepstake. But on this occasion he was playing out of his skin. Even after not scoring on 2 holes, he came in with an impressive 38 points, which can be enough to win on most events. The twins, Matt and Phil I'd had a game with at the weekend to show them the course, and both are very good golfers, but they played better at the weekend than they did on the event in question. In fact I played better at the weekend than I did on the day! Except that is for the 16th hole, where I somehow came up just short of the green with my 2nd shot and went in the greenside bunker, but then chipped in for a birdie! That shot puts me in the lead on our annual eclectic score, where we record everyone's best results on each hole to make up what would be an ideal round if you could do it all in one day! Other interesting shots I witnessed on the day were by Eddie Allen, who on the 10th was having a little trouble with on the palm trees, he hit it the first time on his 2nd shot and it went backwards so he tried again and hit it again! I don't know what he did to the tree or whether he has some great influence, but they cut down that very palm later in the week! Mike Thurman was having similar problems with palms on the 18th. This time it was his drive that stuck up the palm tree at the end of tee (15 feet away!) He then declared that unplayable and took another from the tee and hit the palm again! Not to put people off who haven't played the course before, there isn't that many trees, but just some of them are very strategically placed. If you ever have any problems with palms, just speak to Eddie Allen, he'll get it sorted for you!

Although I've
taken the lead on the eclectic comp, I've now slipped into 2nd place
on our player of the year comp thanks to another outstanding round
from Tony Fawcett, he scored 37 points off his 12 handicap which
put him behind Terry Blood and earned him valuable points for player
of the year. If you want to see who's doing what in our comps visit
the leaderboard section of our website and you'll see with only
4 games left of the season, things are very tight at the top. Both
Terry and Tony's efforts on the day were far surpassed though by
our winner, after just announcing his engagement, Dave Cooper must
have been on a high because he had the round of his life shooting
a gross 82 with an eight on his card off his only recently acquired
18 handicap. This equated to 43 stableford points which of course
put Terry in 2nd place and Tony in 3rd. Congratulations Coops on
getting down now to a 16 handicap! Nearest the pins were both on
the front 9 again, Steed Ansell got nearest on the 4th and ex-captain
Dave Cooper was nearest on the 7th. Guest winner on the day was
a lucky young fella by the name of Gavin Nixon. I say lucky not
for his 31 points he scored on the game itself, not even for the
66 euro he won by being the only one getting a 2 on the day, but
to top it all he also won 50 euro by picking the winner of the day
in our sweepstake! What a day for him!
