It was our biggest turnout of the year so far, 32 players
turned out for our 8th Stableford game of the year. It was nearly
33 but Dennis McKernon had to pull out at the last minute on urgent
business. A total of 14 guests joined us for the day, that would
have 16 but 2 of our regular guests, Gordon Gilhooley and Jim Shady
(the real Jim Shady!) joined the ranks of the membership. So a lot
to organise but everything went smoothly, all went out on time and
all were in high spirits. I was drawn with my guest Alastair Grant
who was staying in my villa, along with 13 handicapper guests Cyril
and regular guest Dave Wright who I'd not played with before. Dave
and his wife, Christine, came on our last trip to Gran Canaria last
week. (More details on the Gran Cananria trip below). Anyway, we
set off about halfway in the field of players, the weather was gorgeous,
beautiful sunshine and a moderate wind. A perfect day one could
say. Guest Dave Wright made a good start with pars on the 1st and
3rd, but the shot of the day was logged on the 6th hole where he
chipped in from the greenside bunker for a birdie! Dave scored 19
points on the front 9, but unknown to him so had his wife Christine,
who in the end just pipped him at the post on the back 9 by just
one shot taking the guest prize.
In the members field, a few were having a good knock too, 3rd place was a 3-way tie between Steed Ansell, Dennis May and Mike Streams all scoring 35 points. In 2nd place being cut yet another shot was myself! I scored 38 points off 16, more than happy with that. Not enough though to beat the mighty Peter Flynn, (didn't someone once write a song about the Mighty Flynn?!) Peter scored an impressive 40 points earning him a 2 shot cut to a 22 handicap.
Nearest the pins were won by 28 handicapper & guest, Chris Lane on the 7th, and John Burgess on the 15th. Our 2's comp was won by Mike Turner for a 2 on the 4th & Jo McKernon for a 2 on the 12th. Lucky Mike Turner also won the sweepstake, a good day for him!
