I was amazed to find
out recently, how many hits we get on our website. We get 1000 visitors
every 2-3 days, that's over 120,000 a year! It's a comforting thought
that the many hours I spend writing reports and doing tables are
actually read by someone other than myself! Some visit the site
for the reports, others for info on the course or the 2004
Spanish Open, and some just like to see who's
doing what or to book my
villa. I've recently spoken to quite a few people
that come on holiday to Fuerteventura that regularly read the reports,
one of whom turns out to be a friend of a friend who has recently
stayed in the villa I rent out. So I would like to say "Hi" to Martin
and family, look forward to seeing you again soon, this time with
your clubs. And it's not just golfers that visit the website either,
some regulars that come to the bar I work in also keep an eye on
what I'm up to! To anyone that knows me, and also those who don't,
thank you for visiting the website, reading reports and supporting
the society.
Anyway on to the event in question. We had the most amazing
electrical storm I've ever seen on this island on the Sunday night,
streaks of lightning every 2 or 3 seconds illuminated the night
sky for a good couple of hours, plus some heavy rain graced our
streets and flooded in places. The next day, you wouldn't even have
known it had rained, it was bright sunshine as usual, which thankfully
carried on to the Tuesday that we played a Stableford comp. Though
not our greatest turnout, we had a nice round twenty including 6
guests joining us for the day. As regular readers will know, things
are running very tight at the top of leader board with just one
point separating myself and Jo McKernon who for this event got drawn
together adding extra pressure to perform well.

Jo as usual
put in a great performance coming in with 33 points which beat my
31, it might be said she had a little help from the occasional “McKernon”
bounce (out of bunkers!) but still managed to out play me. Jo and
myself have to come 3rd or better to improve on our score and 33
points is often enough to do that. We were the 2nd group out and
knew of nearly all the scores except for 2. As it stood, it looked
as though Jo had come 3rd which would have put her level with me
on player of the year, but luckily for me, one of the missing scores
was that of the winner and therefore put Jo into 4th place. A narrow
escape for me! But there was more to drama to come, as we had to
do the draw for the semi-finals of the match play knockout competition.
With only 4 names in the hat, myself, Dennis May, Tony Fawcett and
Jo McKernon! Jo was 1st out of the hat and it was given to me to
pick her opponent, with 3 remaining names in the hat, I only ended
up picking myself to face her, DOH! Which means the other semi-final
will be Tony Fawcett and Dennis May. The draw for the spin off plate
competition and all results are posted here on our website under
the Leaderboard
section.
Talking
of leaders, the winners of the competition of the day were none
other than Dennis May with 37 points, he'll be docked 2 shots, and
in 2nd was his opponent in the semi-finals, Tony Fawcett who scored
36 points and is docked 1 shot! Tony also got nearest the pin on
the 4th and no one managed to hit the 15th! So you can see, the
games are now so close between our members that you wouldn't like
to lay odds on anyone at the moment. Our winning guest of the day
was Peter Flynn with an impressive 34 points and another guest,
Ray from Stables bar in Corralejo got a birdie
on the par three 12th giving him the 2's competition.
Don’t forget our
next event is Tuesday, 25th October. Tee times
are from 10.30 am followed by games on Tuesday 8th
and Sunday 13th November.
