It was our biggest turnout on a Sunday Funday so far this year, also our first Texas scramble of the year on Sunday 14th May. 22 players were made into 11 teams of 2 to play the Texas Scramble format where the team of 2 choose the best position out of their tee shots and then play their next shots from that position and so on until they putt it in the hole. At the end of the round 20% of the combined handicap of the players gets deducted from their gross score. My partner of the day was Paul Benham now playing off 14 after coming 2nd on our last society day. We were playing alongside our president Derek Mac and his partner of the day Tom the diver. On the front 9 we were pretty much head to head on every hole and parring most of them until we reached the dreaded 8th. There's something about that hole that gets to me everytime! Our team came off with a double bogie 6 as did Dereks team. By the end of the front 9 our team was 3 over par with 38 shots and Dereks team was on 6 over but they had a 2 shot advantage on us with their handicaps so it was still anybody's game.

  Dereks & Toms game went downhill a bit on the back 9 but me and Paul only dropped 2 shots giving us a gross of 75. With 5.8 shots of for 20% of our combined handicaps (14 & 15=29) we ended with 69.2. Not bad we thought, in with a chance but a Texas Scramble does favour a team with a lady and a gent in it on this course. Jo McKernon (7 hcap) was partnering Pete Thomas (28 hcap) and despite his best attempts, Pete admitted that he just couldn't out-drive Jo from the ladies tee. They ended up with a gross 76 but with 7 shots being deducted they had a net 69 beating us by 0.2! But even they hadn't accounted for our Captain Rob Hughes who's been playing like a demon recently. He was partnering Paul Worrall (Egor), they also shot a gross 75, dropping all 5 shots on the back 9! Their 20% of combined handicaps (18 & 20) gave them a 7.6 advantage meaning a net score of 67.4 enough to take the glory on the day. Nobody loses shots off their handicap on a Sunday Funday but who knows who's going to be cut on the 23rd May?!
