Our
Sunday funday was dominated by one person and one person only, another
flying Scotsman, but this time not Terry Blood. We had an odd number
of people turnout so team formats were out of the window. Once again
the majority vote was for a stroke play competition, where every
shot you take is recorded, even if it's a 13 on one hole.
I was drawn with 2 members who I hadn't played with since
they joined a short while ago, so it was a nice opportunity to get
to know them. Terry Johnstone, Ken Tull and myself set off as a
3 ball in the middle of the comp. There weren't really any excuses
to be made with the weather, it was slightly overcast with hardly
any wind, pretty much perfect golfing conditions. This doesn't mean
to say that it's not a battle, any golfer will tell you that you
can be your own worst enemy and it's normally a battle with yourself!
I had a reasonable round (for once) and finished with a gross 86,
net 73, 3 shots over par. I was fairly content with that until I
heard the score that was winning. Being diplomatic you could say
that a gross 77 off a 16 handicap is an exceptional round, but not
always the case with Gordon Gilhooley. The course here seems to
suit him and comes in regularly with rounds in the late 70's early
80's. That is except normally on competition days where the pressure
sometimes gets to him, except on this occasion where he ended up
with a net 60. Needless to say his handicap is going to be hacked
with a carving knife, as well it should!
No one was going to beat Gordons score but I was not the only one with a net 73, our captain Rob Hughes shot an 88 off a 15 handicap also giving him a net 73. On a card count back I would have won and thought I had for over half an hour until the last party came in when Peter Flynn entered with a beaming smile across his face! Foiled again, Peter seemingly shot a gross 91 with a 22 handicap giving him a net 69 and 2nd place.
Due to further delays in the preparation of the new course, I didn't get to play this week but have been assured that this Friday coming I will be giving it the once over at close hand.
Don't forget
our next event is on Tuesday, 7th November followed
