Yet again we had a great turn out for our 16th Stableford competition of the year. With a total of 31 players, 9 of which were guests, this was one of our biggest turnouts so far this year. With only 7 more Stableford competitions left this year that count for our yearly competitions, things are starting to hot up. There was a rollover on our 2's competition offering a cash prize of 122 Euro for anyone getting a birdie on a par 3 or an eagle on a par 4!! So there was everything to play for on a beautiful summers day. A few of our regular guests were here and also country member and 12 handicapper, Dan Reeve who accompanied me and for the 1st time this year Ted Hewlett. Due to work commitments and a back injury, Ted hasn't managed to play at all this year, though you wouldn't have thought it the way he was striking the ball!

Luckily for
us, as we were in big numbers, we were able to tee off from both
the 1st and 10th tees, making our finishing times a little closer
together. Some of our members were playing their match play games
along side the normal comp, Pepe Suarez and Pete Thomas accompanied
by Rob Hughes set out from the 1st tee to see whether 28 handicapper
Pepe could knock out Pete form the qualifier round of our individual
match play competition. If you had to lay money on it, most people
would have gone for Pete who is a little more experienced than Pepe,
but Pepe was on fire on this occasion and came in with 21 points
on the front 9 alone! Ending in a win for Pepe 5 and 4 on the match
play, Pepe also managed to score 34 points for the Stableford comp,
his best score ever, despite the fact he did 23 shots on the last
2 holes! 34 points sometimes is enough to win but not on this occasion,
Pepe ended up tied 6th with Rob Hughes. Narrowly missing a handicap
cut (yet again!) was Coops who came in 4th with 37 points after
a tie for 2nd with Paul Benham and Paul Worrall (Igor) who scored
38. But even this was not enough to stop the star of the day, shooting
a gross 76 (only 6 over par) playing off a handicap of 10 and scoring
40 points, Jo McKernon very deservedly won the day. This didn’t
do her any harm on the player of the year comp either, she is now
only 5 points behind me, which means if she comes in the top 4 twice
in the remaining 7 games she will take the lead. She is however,
well and truly leading the eclectic competition, with an eclectic
round of 58! That’s 12 birdies and 6 pars! Will she manage
to birdie them all by the end of the year?
Our guest
winner this week was a regular guest, Mike Minihayne who came in
with 31 points playing off 18. Jo McKernon also won nearest the
pin on the 4th, and nearest the pin on the 15th was Rob Hughes.
Two people managed “2’s” to win 61 euros each,
Dave Cooper and Jo McKernon. Guest Sean Power from Ireland was the
sweepstake winner, the luck of the Irish!
Don't forget
our next event is Tuesday, 30th August. Tee times
are from 10.40 am followed by La Sirena sponsor
cup day Tuesday 13th and Sunday 18th September.
