Four seasons in one
day is about the most accurate way to describe our 2nd society day
of the year, Tuesday 17th January. We had beautiful sunshine, showers,
rainbows, hailstones and I’m sure there was sleet at one time!
With 25mph winds blowing in from the north, when it rained it was
almost horizontal! But thankfully these showers lasted bouts of
10 seconds, 20 seconds, 1 minute, I think the longest lasted for
about 3 minutes. It seemed to be just long enough to get your brolly
out, or get your jumper off! No type of weather lasted for any length
of time. Regular readers and visitors to the Island will know that
the weather has been changeable for what seems like ages now, but
it’s not all bad, just on golf days it seems!

Anyway, it
wasn’t enough to put off the 19 playing on the day. After
the usual last minute shuffles on the draw, we went out as mostly
four-balls. My playing partners of the day were the unstoppable
Dennis May and Mike & Annie Streams. Again you couldn’t
ask for a nicer bunch of people to play with. We all struggled on
the front 9, but Dennis May, true to form pulled it back a bit on
the back 9. We all played some good shots along the way, but Dennis
was the one who shone in our group. Back to our old system of full
handicap Stableford, it was just as well as the conditions were
so tough. Again the winning score equalled the lowest winning score
we’ve ever had. 33 points was enough for Irishman Dermott
Haughian to take the day! In 2nd place was Dennis May with 30 and
in 3rd place Steed Ansell with 29. Hardly scores you would normally
be proud of but if you take the standard scratch of the day they’re
not bad at all.
The winning
guest also played a blinder coming in with 32 points. 18 handicapper
Gordon Gilhooley was head and broad shoulders above the other guests
that included a 6 and a 9 handicapper too. The nearest the pins
on the 7th and 15th deserved a medal just to reach them let alone
get near the pin, but Dermott managed it on the 7th and just a few
feet away on the 15th, he thought he’d got a hole in one,
Paul “Brad Pitt” Benham was closest though only an inch
on the green! I know because I was just a few inches away from him
just off the green! Paul didn’t make birdie though, neither
did anyone else so it’s a rollover on the 2’s.
Memberships are now due
for the society and already we have a few new members. A warm welcome
aboard to Piers Brown and Peter Flynn who have both been regular
guests in the past. I am now making arrangements for another jolly
to Salobre Golf Course in Gran Canaria, for 3,
4 and 5th of April. Full details will be in the next report, but
feel free to contact me by the usual methods if you wish to secure
your place on the trip or want further details
Our next two events are
