As usual it was a hot, sunny day with only a light wind taking the edge off the heat. But hot enough it was for our 17 members and 7 guests playing on the day. I was partnered by 3 of our regular guests, Gary Charnock, Cecil Bartley and Dave Keenen who won the guest prize on the last Sunday competition. Well, rather than a game of golf, it was more like a comedy of errors! It started off ok until we hit the 6th hole, where Cecil decided to hit every tree on the hole! Cecil, from Ireland, on his 3rd hit still by the 1st palm trees by the brook, decided to take out his "tree wood" (3 wood to us!) I stood beside him behind one of the palm trees at a 90º angle and asked him if I was safe, to which he replied I should be. Well, he took a swing and "bang" hit the tree right in line with my left kneecap! So always be aware on a golf course that anything can happen and often does as one of our other playing partners proved on the 9th. After hitting reasonable tee shots we proceeded towards the green, 2 of us making the green in 2, Gary Charnock duffed his 2nd shot and ended about 80 yards from the green. What happened next is a mystery. He had a sand iron in his hand to throw it on the green, but caught it just a little too well and hit the Hotel Clubhouse wall, ran down the roof of the members' bar, bounced on the path and ended up only inches out of bounds!!! I've never seen anything like it! However, after fits of laughter and disbelief, Gary proceeded to plonk it, with the same sand iron, same distance a few feet away from the hole and putted it in for a point!

We didn’t
have to wait long for the bit of entertainment either. By the 10th,
the wind had picked up a bit which meant reaching the 10th green
in 2 a virtual impossibility for most weekend golfers. It was Dave
Keenens’ turn to make his mark this time. On his 3rd shot
into the green he came just a little short and ended up with his
ball well and truly lodged in a tree by the bunker on the green!
Again, me, Gary and Cecil were in hysterics! (See pic) He nearly
did the same on the 16th with one of the tall palms on the dogleg.
His ball stayed in the palm for a good 10 seconds before rattling
its way to the floor. Still, I can’t say too much about the
16th, as it was my turn on that hole. Trying to bite off too much,
I duffed my drive which ran through the brook onto the tarmac, headed
for the green keepers shed, turned round and nearly crossed the
bridge to come back to where I’d started! Wasn’t too
much I could say in my defence after the day we’d had!
Still, some had a good day judging by the final scores. The winner this week was Annie Streams who has recently re-joined us after her injury last year. Annie won with a good score of 37 points, closely followed with a tie for 2nd by Dave Hill and Tony Fawcett with 36 points each. I managed a 4th place with 35 despite my downfall on the 16th. Guest winner this week was a regular Mick Potter with 30 points. Nearest pins were my guest Dave Keenen on the 7th and Tony Fawcett on the 15th. The 2's competition was won by our president, Derek Mac and sweep winner was Coops.
