Tuesday 13th September
was the third of our major cup events of the year for the society.
It was our 2nd sponsors' day, and 2nd sponsored by one of the best
restaurants on the island, "La Sirena" restaurant
in Hoplaco Gardens in the center of Corralejo.
Defending cup holder and currently awol Captain Simon Atherfold
wasn't able to defend his title, so it was anyone's for the taking.
Apart from 3 fabulous trophies for 1st, 2nd & 3rd, there were also
fantastic prizes up for grabs too, all courtesy of Pepe at La
Sirena restaurant. Regular readers will know that I currently
hold the 2 major cup events so far this year. As much as I would
have liked to add to the collection, the odds were against me as
I was spending the night before in Gran Canaria to see Bryan Adams
who was in concert there. Its not very often we get people like
Bryan Adams in this neck of the woods, and being an avid fan I couldn't
miss it. So, after what was a superb concert and just 2 hours sleep,
my excuses were already made. As much as I tried, I couldn't hit
a ball to save my life on the front 9, but thankfully a few of the
others did. It must be said conditions were a little tough, very
hot but with a very strong breeze.

Some good scores did come in but acting vice president Jo McKernon was collecting cards and keeping the results very close to her chest. Though everyone wanted to know who'd won, we managed to keep it secret for the evening presentation meal. All our guests in the competition were staying in Caleta de Fuste and mostly going home the following day, so we did have to present the guest prize at the clubhouse. Though I didn't play well, at least I was in the company of 1 winner of the day, guest Ned Edmond, with 32 points off a 24 handicap who beat off competition from his brother Mark who scored 29. Mark did however get a birdie on the 7th winning him a share of the 2's. Ned also won the sweep, ain't life sweet!
The Evening Presentation Meal
at “La Sirena” Restaurant, Corralejo
After we had all got showered
and changed and made ourselves look respectable, we met up at Chablis
Wine Bar in the main street of Corralejo
with our respective partners, wives and girlfriends, the golf widows
as they are commonly known. We had a few complimentary drinks on
the golf society, and then made our way over to La Sirena
restaurant, just across the road where our host, Pepe greeted
us. Pepe and his staff did an excellent job of catering to our every
whim, serving us lots of aperitifs, vinos, drinks and a beautiful
meal.
Then
came the presentation and speeches. Only 3 people knew for sure
who had won the day, but some had an idea who was in contention.
After a short speech from our President, Derek Mac, he announced
in reverse order, the winners of the game itself. Third place winner
was Dave Hill, who was also 3rd in last years Sirena Cup, Dave was
only beaten by a card play-off with second place Dave Cooper, both
had 36 points, but Coops had 1 extra point on the back 9. In compensation
for that, Dave Hill did get a 2 on the 4th winning himself the other
half of the 2's money as well as his 3rd place cup and prize from
La Sirena. Coops for his trouble won himself the runner up cup and
meal for 2 in La Sirena and of course a well-deserved shot docked
off his handicap! Winner of the day, who has been playing more like
his old self lately, was our clubhouse host, Rob Hughes, who by
one shot, (37 points) took the glory and title of La Sirena Cup
winner 2005. Presenting the cup were President Derek Mac and sponsor,
Pepe. Rob won a superb trophy to keep and a wine rack full of top
quality wines, reservas and champagne. Congratulations to Rob.
After the presentation, we made the draw for the quarterfinals of the individual match play and 1st round of the plate competitions. There are some very interesting games coming up, one of them being mine! I was drawn with Paul Benham who knocked me out of last years comp! Paul has gone away for a week, so our match won't be played until the beginning of October, rumour has it that he's gone away for secret lessons with a pro! (I wonder who started that rumour!) The details
of these and all our other competitions are posted on the Leaderboard
page where you can find the up to date state of play on all our
competitions and who is
doing what and when.
Don’t
forget our next event is Tuesday, 27th September.
Tee times are from 10.40 am followed by Sunday 9th October.
