We held our first ever 1 day Ryder Cup on Tuesday, 6th September. Phil Richards devised the format where we play the Ryder Cup format all in one day, i.e. 6 holes of better ball, 6 holes of foursomes and 6 holes of individual match play. As in the real Ryder Cup we had two teams lead by Derek Mac (President) and Jo McKernon (acting vice president) competing for a fantastic Ryder Cup of our own donated by club member Dermott Haughian. Each team of 12 was picked playground fashion after the toss of a coin. The Captains, Derek & Jo, then went and studied the teams they'd picked to pair them off ready for battle! Out of interest we added up each teams handicaps to see who had, in theory, the stronger side. Believe it or not the difference was only one, 250 to 251! So it was all down to tactics and players on the day.

As usual we
had fantastic weather for the event, each 4 ball was fairly balanced,
so it was anybody's game. Towards the end it was Derek's team that
was looking favourable, but the final four balls were all running
close. It was down to the individuals that were all running neck
and neck. It couldn't have ended any closer, 1 putt, 1 chip, 1 drive,
any of these shots could have tipped the balance, but the winning
team with 12 and a half to 11 and a half was acting vice presidents
Jo McKernon's team.
A
celebratory drink in our clubhouse, the Kings Arms and the presentation,
then it's until next year when the Presidents team will try to steal
the Ryder Cup from the vices clutches!
Don’t
forget our next event is Tuesday, 27th September.
Tee times are from 10.40 am followed by Sunday 9th October.
