It was our first major event
of 2005, the Captains Cup, in Honour of this years
Captain, Mr. Simon Atherfold. Defending cup holder,
Phil Richards has been playing well of late, but had a lot of competition
with last years' runner-up Andy Knapman in hot contention along
with another 27 competitors. It has to be said that we had pretty
much perfect conditions for the day, beautiful blue skies and a
light breeze. All was going well for Phil on the front 9 with a
whopping 23 points, he must have thought he had it in the bag, until
he got a little lax with an 8 inch tap-in on the 8th hole and went
round the lip and out, costing him psychological torment over the
next few holes. He managed however, to pull himself together and
come off with 38 points, enough to be in with a chance of retaining
his cup? What he didn't count on was a card play-off with last years'
runner-up Andy Knapman also coming off with 38 points!
Much to Phil's dismay,
I was also having a good day, concentrating on keeping my head and
staying relaxed. By the 17th I had 37 points, in with a chance I
thought, but after 3 shots being just 15 feet off the 17th green
on the bank, I duffed not one, but 3 chip shots and 2 putted leaving
me with no score on the hole! Things could have gone either way
from there, but after having a good round in great company, I managed
to get 2 points on the 18th securing me victory by one point. As
you can imagine, Phil was a little sick about his missed putt on
the 8th, but I promise I only rubbed it in once after that at the
evening presentation!

John Birch
(Pinky), who worked for Sky TV on the Spanish Open here last year,
as well as the Madrid Open, very kindly sponsored a 50 euro prize
for a birdie on the 17th (which wasn’t won and is rolled over!)
and a bottle of red, white and rosé for the winning lady,
which was our very own “hairbrain” Elaine Knapman with
28 points.
The
evening meal and presentation was held at Tio Bernabe’s
Restaurant in Corralejo. A fabulous selection of tapas
along with free flowing wines, beers and anything else you wanted,
ensured a good time was had by all. Lots of prizes were presented
and the party carried on ‘til the early hours (as far as I
can remember!)
Nearest the pins on the par 3’s were won by Tony
Fawcett on the 4th hole, Steed Ansell on the 7th, Pepe Suarez of
“La Sirena” got within a few feet of the 12th, also
taking a share of the 100 euro 2’s competition with Jo McKernon
and one of our newest members Frank Kenny was closest on the 15th.
We also had nearest the pins in 2 on the 9th and 18th, won by Paul
Benham on the 9th and Tony Fawcett on the 18th. The nearest the
pins were sponsored by myself, Phil Richards, Derek Mac, The Blue
Rock bar, The Grapevine magazine and Andy Knapman (expert in swimming
pool construction). Our guest winner on the day was Terry Bloods’
son Steve and the lucky person picking me on the sweep was Margot
Kenny, (I had also picked her out!)
A reminder also of our away day trip to Lanzarote
(Sunday April 17th) cost including green fees, buggy, transport
to & from the course and a bite to eat afterwards is 100 euro.
The 2-day competition at Solobre Golf course
in Gran Canaria (26-27th July) will cost around 200 euro,
which includes flights, 2 rounds of golf, buggy and a night in a
4 star hotel including breakfast. There are limited places for both
these events so it will be on a 1st come, 1st served basis.
