What will be the first
of many by the sounds of it. On Tuesday 26th July at 8.30am we met
up in the airport for our 1st Corralejo Golf Society Open to be
held at Salobre Golf and Resort in Maspalomas,
Gran Canaria. Getting there in plenty of time for tee off, we had
lunch as we made the draw for the 36 hole, 2 day tournament. The
course looked spectacular being carved out of a valley in the mountains.
It was overcast, a blessing one might say, but that didn't dampen
anyone's spirit. Everyone was in good humour after being so warmly
welcomed and looked after by the staff at Salobre. In groups of
3 we tackled unknown territory to most, but with aid of a free course
guide provided by the caddies, we found our way up and down mountains,
off cliff tops and through valleys in what was a superbly kept golf
course. I was in the last group finishing just in time for the bus
to take us to our hotel, the 4 star Marina Suites Hotel overlooking
the marina in Puerto Rico.

We were on
a tight schedule as we had booked a meal at the restaurant for 9.30,
giving us less than an hour to make ourselves look beautiful, not
easy in some of our cases! A few of the wives and girlfriends had
came over with us to do a bit of shopping and lazing around the
hotel. Jill from Fuertenews,
Tracy from Chablis and Elsie Blood had booked in
earlier in the day. They had had time to enjoy what can only be
described as a superb hotel with air conditioned suites bigger than
the average size of peoples' apartments in Corralejo. The rooms
were huge, about 80 m2, with air conditioning and Satellite TV,
with fantastic views overlooking the marina and Atlantic Ocean.
The players, all tired from the days events would I'm sure have
liked to spent a little time in the rooms, but although tired we
were all ravenous. We met in the hotel bar (where else?!) and were
led into a private room for 1st class a la carte meal. Jill being
the only vegetarian in the bunch didn't miss out on anything, she
had course after course of lovely looking items, nearly persuaded
me to be a veggie, until they brought out beautifully cooked steaks
and sea bass. The meal was excellent, and with a few drinks after,
a wonderful end to a perfect day. Some, Pepe from la Sirena
restaurant, Pete Thomas of About Cars and Steve
Bennett, got their 2nd wind and decided to hit the nightlife of
Puerto Rico. Their choice as I believe they only had just over one
hours sleep before breakfast and another days golf beckoned!
Following tradition, the
leaders of the 1st day, Dave Cooper and Annie and Mike Streams were
to tee of last giving them a little more time to wake up as we were
being picked up at 8am by the bus. The 2nd day the sun was shining
and even 1st thing in the morning it was plenty warm enough. Knowing
the course a little better this time, most had a better 2nd day
than 1st, in the end only 4 shots separated the top 8! The overall
winner with a score of 70 points (34 & 36) was Dennis May, closely
followed by Dennis McKernon with 69 (33 & 36). 3rd place was Dave
Cooper with 68 (36 & 32) and Annie & Mike Streams, Paul Benham,
Derek Pickersgill and Steve Bennett with 66 and 67's just behind.
We held a nearest the pin on the short par 3 third hole which was
won on the 1st day by Derek Pickersgill and myself on the 2nd.
All in all, the trip was
a resounding success, the only comment we had was that it was too
short! I would like to thank everyone who attended the trip, and
all the staff at the golf course and hotel for making us feel so
welcome and looking after us so well. We are already planning our
next open for May 2006, so watch out for details on our website
and on www.fuertenews.com
Remember our
next events are Stableford competitions held on Tuesday,
16th Aug. and Tuesday 30th Aug. Tee times
