The 1st of this years away
days, our excursion to Costa Teguise Golf was a resounding success,
despite the fact that it was blowing a force 9 gale! The ferry over
was a little rough, even on the Fred Olsen fast ferry, but back
on dry land we headed up to course in Costa Teguise where we were
given a warm welcome by the staff and members. As not everyone had
played the course in Lanzarote, we played a Texas scramble so that
at least you could hedge your bets a little with 2 cracks of the
whip. The wind was as strong as I’ve ever known it in the
9 years I’ve been here, which made play a little tricky to
say the least. The ground staff had got the course in very good
condition, and the greens were pretty fast. This meant putting down
wind was like lightning and certainly made you think about any shot
that went up in the air. Some shots even seemed to come back towards
you! Despite the wind, everyone had a great day, and back at the
clubhouse after the game, we were served with some fabulous tapas
and wetted the whistles with a few jars and talked about the many
mishaps and funny stories of the days’ events.
It has to be said (begrudgingly), that the winners
of the day, winning themselves a 100 Euro, must have played exceptionally
well to come off with a gross score of 72.2 in such conditions.
The dynamic duo, Dennis and Jo McKernon (handicaps 18 & 11)
used their wealth & experience to pip me and my playing partner,
Phil Richards, by just 1.8 shots to secure victory on our 1st Lanzarote
challenge.
But the days’ events were far from over.
We got back to the ferry port in Playa Blanca in plenty of time
to catch our return ferry, but the wind wasn’t letting the
Fred Olsen pull away from the harbour wall despite having it’s
powerful jets on full blast. It took over half an hour of trying
and in the end they had to anchor the offside rear of the boat to
the dock and basically pull full throttle to left and drop the anchoring
rope once it had pulled out far enough to safely go forward. Once
out of the harbour, it was a smoother crossing than our outward
one. Well, there’s never a dull moment on our society days.
Our next adventure away is a 2 day, 36 hole competition at Solobre
Golf Club in Gran Canaria on the 26/27th
July.
Don’t
forget our next event is Tuesday, 26th April. Tee
times are from 10.40 am followed by a fun comp on Tuesday
10th May.
