PRESIDENTS
CUP DAY 6TH DECEMBER 2005
It was the last of our
major events of 2005, and indeed the last game of the season for
our yearly comps. Yet again it was a record-breaking day, not for
amount of players, nor for the highest score, in fact incredibly
it was the lowest ever scoring match we've had!
Defending cup holder Joan Roaden
hasn’t been playing lately, and wasn’t able to defend
her title this year. There were plenty of others though gunning
for the Presidents cup. Regular readers will know that being the
last game of the season, it was last chance to make an impression
on our yearly comps, only Derek Mac, Rob Hughes and Paul Benham
had any real chance of catching Jo McKernon on the yearly eclectic
table, and needed 4 birdies! A tall order one thinks. Myself and
Jo McKernon were level on the player of year and we had to come
within the top 3 to better our scores, if not we would half the
competition. Well, I came 6th with 29 points and Jo came 10th with
25! So indeed we halved it. Incredibly, it was a 3-way tie for 2nd
place, on these occasions we do card play-off, working from the
best back 9, back 6 or back 3 if still tied. This meant the placings
were as follows, in 4th place was Alan Wrigley, 33 points, 17 on
the back 9 with 5 on the last 3 holes, 3rd place with 33 points,
17 on the back 9 but 8 on the last 3 was Dave Cooper and in 2nd
place with 18 on the back 9 was Andy Knapman. Leaving only space
for our victor of the 2005 presidents cup, Tony Fawcett with 34
points.
Congratulations Tony, not
only from myself and the rest of the society, but also from your
eldest daughter Dawn and her husband Paul, who are regular readers
of the golf report. Initially, his daughter emailed me to congratulate
him not for the presidents’ cup, but for his victory in the
individual match play competition, so Tony had double reason to
celebrate the end of this season. A full list of the years honours
you can find on our website here

Nearest the pins on the par
3’s were won by Pepe Suarez of “La Sirena” on
the 4th hole, Jo McKernon on the 7th, Dave Hill on the 12th and
Dermott Haughian was closest on the 15th. Our guest winner on the
day was unstoppable Peter Flynn also with 34 points and the lucky
person picking the winner on the sweep was Dave Hill.
The evening presentation was a combined Presidents cup, end of season
and
Christmas meal all rolled into one. By popular choice, the president
held the meal at
Pepes restaurant, “La Sirena” and as usual Pepe did
us proud with the fantastic food
he’d prepared along with his other half, Wendy and the rest
of his staff. They had to
close the restaurant to the public as there was 50 of us, (apologies
to Pepes regulars).

After a superb variety of starters, we were served with the most
delicious Christmas dinner you could imagine, and after coffee and
sweets we started the presentation. At the beginning of the year
we thought it would be nice to run through and re-present all the
major trophies of the year. All put together they make quite an
impressive display!
Starting with the
yearly competitions, as we said before Jo McKernon won the eclectic
by a big margin and halved the Player of the Year with myself, a good year for Jo. The main Match Plat Competition was won this year by Tony Fawcett and the spin-off
Plate Competition was won for the
2nd year running by Andy Knapman! Also having had a good start to
the year was myself! I won the 1st 2 major cups of the year, the
Captains Cup and the Brocemar Sponsors Cup, Rob Hughes won the La Sirena cup in September and of course Tony Fawcett won the Presidents
cup. Guest winner as we said was Peter Flynn who won himself a beautiful
oil painting handcrafted by the talented Suma, (Coops’ other
half).
The party continued through the night, (so I’m
told!) and judging by the feedback we received, everyone thoroughly
enjoyed the night. All in all it’s been a great year for the
society and a few new things are lined up for the year to come.
In the next report we’ll tell you about some of the new things
happening in the year to come along with reports on how our Sunday
funday and xmas golf bash went, but for now on behalf of the Corralejo
Golf Society, I would like to wish all our readers, supporters and
friends a very Merry Christmas!
Don’t
forget our next event is Tuesday, 3rd January.
