Broncemar Beach Cup header

We had our biggest ever turnout for our 2nd major cup day of the year sponsored by the Broncemar Beach Apartments in Caleta de Fuste. This is the 3rd year running the Broncemar Beach have sponsored this event. I was defending my title as last years' winner but wasn't holding up much hope of retaining it the way I've been playing recently! There were however another 33 players who maybe stood a chance!a
As with all our major cup days, we have nearest the pins on all four par 3's and nearest the pin in 2 on the 9th and 18th. Our sponsors for these prizes were The Kings Arms and Chaplins Bar in Caleta, Rogues Gallery in Corralejo and Canary Air .

2006 Broncemar Beach Cup winner Dennis May, with runner-up Jo McKernon, 3rd place Steed Ansell and 4th place John Burgess

Amongst the 34 players on the day were 7 guests, 4 of which are regular guests, John Cockroft, Mike Minihayne, Paul Wilson and Stuart Lane. There was quite a mixed bunch with handicaps ranging from 4 to 27 playing on a ¾ handicap basis. My group consisted of a guest Gary, who was playing off 4, young Dan Reeve, country member whiz kid playing off 10 and President Derek Mac playing off 18. We were about halfway through the field of players trying our best to compete against the strong field of players. It has to be said that the conditions were pretty good, the sun was beating down and the wind was at its normal strength, making play as usual as tough as you’d want it. I don’t know whether it was me bringing the rest of our four ball down, or whether the others were also having a not so good day too, but it seemed none of us were playing exceptionally well. We all finished within 5 points of each other, but nowhere near enough to be in contention for the cup.

Guest winner, near pin and sweep winner Stuart Lane. With nearest the pin on 7 Dennis May and nearest the pin on the 9th Paul Wilson

Others of course were faring slightly better! One of our regular guests, Stuart Lane faired the best. He scored the highest out of the whole society including members and guests! With 8 shots he scored a whopping 37 points with 2 blobs on the front 9! He was also the only one to get a “2” and he did it in style by getting 2, one on the 7th and the other on the 12th, so he had to split the 2’s money with himself!
In the members comp it was very close at the top. Yet again it was to be a card play-off to determine 2nd place. Jo McKernon, John Burgess and Steed Ansell all scored 32 points, Jo had the highest back 9 followed by Steed and then John. But the clear winner of the 2006 Broncemar Beach Cup was none other than Dennis May, with 35 points off a ¾ handicap.

L to R: Nearest the pin on 15 Gary Solomon. Nearest the pin on 18 Billy Seaforth. Wooden Spoon winner Graham Thomson

As many of the guests weren't coming to the evening presentation meal, and many of them featured in prizes, we did a little presentation at the golf course for their prizes. Nearest the pins, well, no one out of 34 players managed to hit the 4th green! Despite Stuart Lane getting a 2, Dennis May got nearest on the 7th. Nearest the pin in 2 on the 9th was guest Paul Wilson, Stuart Lane got the 12th and a 2, and another guest Gary Solomon was nearest on the 15th. Lucky person getting 30 euro out of Coops after sponsoring the nearest pin in 2 on the 18th, was Billy Seaforth. Billy turned 40 the Saturday after the cup, happy birthday Billy. To add insult to injury, the winner of the sweepstake was none other than Stuart Lane, what a day he had!
