It was our first major event
of 2006, the Captains Cup, in Honour of this years
Captain, Mr. Rob Hughes. I was the defending cup
holder and as the regular readers will know I have been playing
well of late, but there were many of us who have been playing well
lately, Paul Benham, Alan Wrigley, new member Vince Price and of
course Jo McKernon to name but a few. To add to the excitement a
little, Dermott Haughian was running a book offering very reasonable
odds even on the favourite, Paul Benham who was 8-1 on. I didn't
want to bet on myself and add to the pressure but I did have a bet
on the others!!!
The game
itself was played off a ¾ handicap, something we are doing for
our Cup days this year. It really was anybody's day. Amongst our
guests joining us for the day were some familiar faces, 10 handicappers
Morten Laird and Stuart Fraser, 6 handicapper Kenny Hope and 22
handicapper Gary Charnock. Gary, who is a regular in Talk of the
Town where I work, had a few rounds with me and Dave Keenen during
the week, and it has to be said that his aim is impeccable. Cecil
Bartley who was going to join us on the Friday before the cup
day, couldn't make it. Some may remember Cecil who has the fame
of hitting pretty much every tree and bunker on the course. Well,
as I said he couldn't make it, so Gary must have taken a few tips
from him because Gary managed to hit a 3 inch wide tree trunk
right in the centre sending it back to more or less where he started
and then did exactly the same thing again! A target that small
takes a lot of skill to hit twice!!!

Our Captain
Rob had lined up some fantastic prizes for the day with the help
of sponsors, The Kings Arms, (Robs pub), Tony from
Chaplins Bar, Dave Coopers Canary air,
Fuerteventura Property Portfolio, Dermott and Alan
Wrigley. All the par 3’s were covered for nearest the pins,
there was nearest the pin in 2 on the 9th, 16th and 18th as well
as a bottle of something for anyone getting a birdie on the 1st.
Also, not one, but 3 longest drive competitions for both ladies
and gents, one of them offering a Calloway Big Bertha 10º for
the longest drive on the 10th.
After a photo
shoot on the 1st tee to see Mr Captain off, the battle commenced.
It was very closely run race that ended up in a 3-way tie for the
cup. In joint 4th place were myself and Jo McKernon with 32 points
and Paul Benham, Vince Price and rank outsider Steve Cording were
all tied on 34 points. In this situation we revert back to a card
play-off for the best score starting from the back 9 holes. As it
happens, as we were playing off a ¾ handicap the results panned
out in the order it would have been off full handicap. In 3rd place
was odds-on favourite Paul Benham who scored 14 on the back 9. In
2nd place was Vince Price who scored 19 on the back 9 and 11 on
the back 6, which meant our winner with 19 on the back 9 and 12
on the back 6 was Steve Cording. So close was the play-off. Congratulations
to Steve on his 1st win with the society and what a day to do it
on!
The other
prizes were won as follows; no one got a birdie on the 1st but both
Coops and I lipped out narrowly missing a bottle of booze. Nearest
the pin was won by Margot Kenny on the 4th hole, Paul Benham on
the 7th, Stuart Fraser was nearest in 2 on the 9th, Jo McKernon
on the 12th, no one stayed on the green on the 15th, nearest pin
in 2 on the 16th was Margot Kenny and Stuart Fraser on the 18th.Womens
longest drive on the 5th and 10th were won by Annie Streams and
Jo McKernon on the 17th. The men’s longest drive was won by
Stuart Fraser on the 5th, winning the Calloway driver on the 10th
was Coops (I did out drive him by 2 metres but was just off the
fairway!) and an absolute monster on the 17th was won by Steve Cording.
The 102 euro 2’s competition was won by Margot Kenny, who
was the only one who got a birdie on a par 3. The lucky person to
pick the winner in the sweepstake was tree abuser, Gary Charnock
and the only one with faith in the winner Steve Cording in Dermotts
book, was Pete Thomas who took the lot.
The evening
presentation was held next door to Robs bar in Caleta. We all met
at the Kings arms for a few drinks and then next door to the restaurant.
After a superb selection of starters we presented the prizes for
the nearest the pins, longest drives and a few extras too like who
could balance the most spoons on their nose! (Initiated by Paul
Benham but won by Jenny, Steeds girlfriend) wooden spoon, wouldn’t
normally do it but it was Dennis McKernon so we did! Then we had
the main course and dessert and presented the main prizes. Unfortunately,
our winning guest Stuart Fraser couldn’t make it as it was
his last night, and even our winning member Steve Cording was unable
to attend. Their cups and prizes will be presented at a later date.
However, it didn’t stop us celebrating on their behalf.
Continuing
the party we moved back to Captain Robs bar, the Kings Arms
for some karaoke. It took no persuading to get anyone up to sing,
Vince was 1st there closely followed by Tony Fawcett and our Trace.
My mate from back home was with us and got dragged into singing
too and brought the house down. I didn't know Paul Benham liked
a chirp, couldn't get him off stage, unlike him! Everyone was up
dancing too, Dermott was strutting his stuff with the Mr. Captains
girlfriend amongst others! It was an absolutely superb night, probably
the best yet. Can't wait for our trip to Gran Canaria in April,
I know that's gonna be a scream.
The 2-day competition at Solobre Golf course
in Gran Canaria (26-27th July) will cost around 200 euro,
which includes flights, 2 rounds of golf, buggy and a night in a
4 star hotel including breakfast. There are limited places for both
these events so it will be on a 1st come, 1st served basis.
