An extraordinary day in many ways was Tuesday the 20th of December. The rain was lashing down and showing no signs of letting up. A few of the people who turned up to play on the day decided it was not going to be a day they wanted to play on! Even our president Derek Mac dithered right up until the last minute whether to play or not! In the end 19 of the 21 decided to brave the elements. And what a field we had! One of our guests of the day was a pro, a scratch player, we also had handicappers of 7, 9, 10,11, 12 & 13 along with the majority being 18-21 handicap. It must be said the conditions weren't easy, not only was it raining for 1st and last hour, the winds were also blowing to almost gale force too! It must be said that those who played are definitely not fair weather golfers!

We went out in groups of 3 except for my group going out last that had 4 to make the round a little quicker. Despite the less than perfect conditions everyone was up for a good time and yet another record was broken! On the Presidents Cup the winning score was 34, our lowest ever win, but even this record was to be broken on this occasion! Our guests ended up in a card play off for the 2nd place, Bruce "Blue" the scratch player scored 30 points, a round of 76! Pretty impressive I can tell you, but on a card play off, Gundo a guest from Germany playing off an equally impressive handicap of 9 also scored 30 but had the better points on the back 9. Winning guest was Neil Pirie playing off 12. A lot of celebrating was done during the presentation with Coops, so I would think he spent the rest of the week in the dog house!
In the members
competition, in 3rd place with 29 points was Dennis May, in 2nd
place with 31 points off a handicap of 10 was Dermott Haughian and
the winner on the last competition of the year was none other than
ME with 33 points! The irony of it all was that the special prize
for the winner of the Christmas bash, a weekend for 2 in a luxury
suite at the 5 Star Golf Hotel half-board, a prize worth over 400
euros was sponsored mostly by myself! What were the chances of winning
your own prize?! People would have been just as happy with a brolly
as a prize I think! All four par 3's were sponsored for nearest
the pin and our President, Derek Mac sponsored a nearest the pin
in 2 on the 9th. Nearest the pin on the 4th was Dennis McKernon,
on the 7th was guest Mark Ventors, on the 12th Dennis May and nobody
hit the green (and stayed on it!) on the 15th. Only 2 people reached
the 9th green in two, with the wind against it took 2 almighty hits
only achieved by Tony Fawcett and the nearest pin in 2 winner, Bruce
"Blue". Lucky person to draw me on the sweep was Dennis May. Nobody
got a "2" so its a rollover for the 3rd Jan.
