I've been in negotiation over the last month or two
with both the existing golf course, Fuerteventura Golf Club and
the new course Las Salinas Golf Resort due to open mid to late September.
I have managed to strike a great deal with both courses for next
year fixtures for the society. I'll reveal more details about the
new course and things we have lined up for next year over the coming
weeks, but for now time to catch up with the latest happenings in
the society.
I was surprised to see as many as we had on our Sunday
Funday after so many playing the day before in a Spanish Federation
comp. A lot of our regulars weren't playing, Captain Rob Hughes
and President Derek Mac were A.W.O.L plus a few others. Still we
scraped together 11 of us including Manolo, a Spanish guy I had
played with the day before in the Federation competition. Amongst
our other players were some 1st timers with the society. Dave and
Sarah who have just opened the Iceland store in Corralejo are keen
golfers and joined for the day.

In my fourball I had Gordon
Gilhooley, Manolo and a young fella from Ireland, Larry Brady who
plays off 20. He's got a great swing for a 15 year old and I'm sure
he'll bring his handicap down in next to no time. Despite the fact
that Manolo doesn't speak any English, the four of us had a great
"craic" as the Irish would say! It was really nice to spend a few
hours in everyone's company and there was some terrific golf played
to. Not so much from me, but my game improved on the back 9.
To save complications, we just played a straight full
handicap Stableford competition and all chucked in a few euros for
the winner and 2nd place. A lot of us including myself, scored 30
points, Sarah from the Iceland store scored 33, Vince Price scored
34, but in 2nd place with 37 was Dennis May. Not enough to shake
the days' winner with 39 points, Scotsman Gordon Gilhooley romped
in with another good round. We popped down to the Kings Arms for
the presentation where we sank a few shandys, (courtesy of Gordon!)
and watched the remainder of the British Open on the TV, what a
day!
