An unusual day in many ways, we were all starting off
the 10th tee as they were still working on the greens on the front
9. When we got there, there was hardly any wind at all, but within
30 minutes it started blow fairly moderately in exactly in the opposite
direction to normal! It was like playing a different course!
To the people that hadn't played the course before it wouldn't
have made any difference but to those who play it regularly it was
weird! Although the wind was appearing to be from behind on some
holes, it didn't seem to carry the ball much further, but when it
was in your face it did stop it going forward! Of course on the
dreaded 2nd hole, index one, it was pushing away from out of bounds,
nice for a change, but it made some holes you take for granted in
reaching in 2 like the 1st a nightmare! I personally found it hard
on the holes where I don't get any shots, in theory the easiest
holes, the 4th, 9th, 15th, 16th & 18th. They may be the easiest
holes with the prevailing wind, but the exact opposite with the
wind against. Winging over, I did have a good round and was playing
with some familiar faces, Cecil "the woodcutter" Bartley and Brian
Lees both regular guests with the society and in my bar. Joining
us three was a Spanish man, Antonio from Asturias who played with
us at the weekend. Cecil played really well and only hit one or
2 trees this time! In total we had 34 players, 12 of whom were guests,
another great turnout.

It was another scorcher
of a day, although storms were predicted. The change in wind direction
normally brings some rain but thankfully it held off until the next
day! The winning scores were not as high as they have been of late,
but that could be down to the wind, (I seem to be full of wind today!)
There were a few surprises on the winning podium, in 3rd place with
33 points off 15 was Captain Rob Hughes, not too much surprise there,
but for the 1st time in the top 10 and coming in 2nd place with
35 points off a 28 handicap was Bill Seaforth Senior! I reckon he's
been having lessons off his son Billy! Congratulations to Bill,
a great day for him. Not enough to beat our winner though, we've
not seen too much of her in the winning ranks this year, Jo McKernon
scored 37 points off a 9 handicap and won the day. However, 37 points
was also the winning score for our guest competition, Bernie Cresswell
playing off a 13 handicap equalled Jo's score making it a card play-off
for the sweepstake. Unfortunately for guest Stuart Blyde who played
with Bernie, Jo scored higher on the back 9 meaning vice captain
Dennis May got the dosh on this occasion!
As we were starting from the 10th tee, we put the nearest
the pins on the back 9 on holes 12 & 15. Nearest on the 12th was
Peter Flynn about 12 feet away and using a driver into the wind
getting within 4 feet from the pin on the 15th was John Burgess.
John however didn't sink the put for a 2 which meant only one person,
a guest Graham Errington, managed to get a "2" winning himself 68
euro.

GOOD NEWS &
BAD!
Latest news on the new
course, Las Salinas de Antigua is planning to open the front 9 holes
on November 10th and the rest of the course around the middle of
December to give it a little more time to mature. That’s the
good news, the bad news is both courses will have an increased prices
during the winter months, their high season. Fuerteventura Golf
Clubs’ prices will be 65 Euro for non-residents and 55 for
residents. This makes being a member of our society even more valuable
as we have negotiated great rates for the next year, plus we will
have an increased number of events on our calendar for 2007. As
from January 2007 we will be playing every Tuesday and 2 Sundays
in a month. This will be split evenly between both courses. This
season isn’t over yet, we still have 3 Tuesday events, the
last being the Presidents Cup on December 5th which will bring our
yearly competitions to a close. It’s very tight at the top
and is still anyone’s game on both eclectic and Player of
the year. The finals of our individual Match play and Plate comps
will be held on the day of our AGM on 12th December. Information
and latest tables can be found on leaderboard
section of our site.
We have been experiencing a few problems with the email,
so apologies to anyone who hasn’t managed to get through to
us, or haven’t received a reply. We’ve set up a temporary
alternative email address corralejogolf@hotmail.com
that will also be re-directing mail to our main address.
Don’t forget our next event is Tuesday 7th
November. Tee times are from 10.00 am followed by Sunday
12th and Tuesday 21st November tees times
are also from 10am.
