Corralejo Golf Society, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

After nearly a week of changeable weather, we weren't sure whether the clouds were in for the day or not, but it turned out by half past 9 there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Hardly any wind either, but that of course didn't last! By the time I'd sat down on the terrace of the golf course clubhouse, got organised with all the cards and paperwork, the wind picked up and started scattering everything! Held it together just about, and re-did the draw as Coops had to pull out at the last minute due to illness (hangover if you ask me!). As it happened he did us a favour as it meant without him we would be able to go out in groups of 4. Unusually only 2 guests with us this time, Bill Seaforth (senior) a regular guest and a guy we'd named the "Flying Dutchman" Corné Sunerman. Corné a 12 handicapper from Rotterdam joined our 3 ball last Tuesday when the course was busy and played with us again on the Sunday before the comp in question. Nicknamed the Flying Dutchman because he's one of the few golfers I know who can drive the 11th green (and go through it!).

Corralejo Golf Winner Tony Fawcett and Runner up John Burgess

I was drawn with Corné, Steed Ansell, another big hitter and Annie Streams. We were bringing up the rear so to speak. Annie & I got off to a good start with 18 each on the front 9, (back 9 was another story!) Shot of the front 9 has to go to Corné, who on the par 5 fifth had a good drive leaving him about 205 metres to the pin, but his line was extremely tight due the palm trees by the 11th green obscuring his line a little. As this was to be his last game this holiday he decided to go for it, and go for it he did! On the green in 2 and putting for eagle, something most of us just dream about. Narrowly missing his putt for eagle, but tapping in a 3-footer for his birdie, hats off to the Flying Dutchman! He impressed us again a bit later on with his drive to the edge of the green on the par 4 11th. Though all his game was not as successful as the for-mentioned shots, he did have his best round of the holiday and scored enough to beat his competition for the day, Bill Seaforth by 6 points.

Corralejo Golf Guest Winner Corne Sunerman and Nearest the Pin Winner Jo McKernon

In the members comp, despite our racing start, Annie & me fell apart a little on the back 9 but managed to scrape 4th place alongside our newest member Derek Bailey. Derek finally joined the ranks after having been with us on our last 2 Gran Canaria trips. In 3rd place was someone we haven't heard from for a while, Dennis "the menace" McKernon with 33 points. In 2nd place with 34 points was John Burgess. Is his success due to his wife & caddy, Joyce? (Or the 5 times a week he practices!) Winner this week only loses one shot from his handicap as he won without playing to his handicap, a good result for 12, (now 11) handicapper Tony Fawcett who scored 35 points. Tony also got the nearest the pin on the 7th and Jo McKernon was nearest on the 15th. The sweepstake was won by a very happy Mike Streams! No one got a 2 on the day, so this means that it's a rollover for our next comp on the 9th of May. We are now making preparations for our yearly Matchplay knockout that will start in June. It is only to members and is offering prizes to the value of a whopping 900 Euro! So if you were thinking of joining the society as a member now would be a good time to do it.

Don't forget our next events are on the Tuesday 9th May and Tuesday 9th May. Tee off times are 10.00am. This is followed by games on Sunday 14th and Tuesday 23rd May.
