Tuesday 25th of October
was like a school reunion really! 3 of our 5 guests play with us
a few times a year whenever they're here on holiday, and the other
2 played with us on our last event. Also after a spell away, Terry
Blood joined the ranks once again giving us the makings of a great
days golf. And that it was too! One of our guests, Cecil Bartley
(supplier of our society balls) always entertains us with use of
the trees on the course, if there's a tree there he'll find it!
Gary Charnock, who's been here on holiday for a month (with the
odd bit of slave labour in between) was suffering from pains inflicted
from his hard work over the last few weeks (as well as the effects
of drinking Talk of the Towns infamous champagne!)
and Brian Lees another regular to the island had played like a demon
on the practice round we'd had a few days before. This completed
my four ball, a thoroughly entertaining day we had in great company.
The golf wasn't bad either!

We were the last group out on a perfect day weather wise for golf. A few clouds masked the burning sun for about half the round, and a steady breeze was just enough to keep us cool. This amounted to me having a half decent round, something I've been lacking for quite a while now. With 37 points I felt I was in with a chance, but I was not the only one with a reasonable score. Paul Benham matched me with 37 and Paul Worrall (Egor) romped in with 40 points winning the day and earning him a 2 shot cut on his handicap. As in all cases of a tie on points in our society, we use a card play-off to determine 2nd place. Whoever had the best back nine holes, which in this case was me, takes the play-off. We do still get the same cut on handicaps for the score we had bringing myself down to my target for the year, 18, and Paul Benham to a well deserved 17!
Not only did
Egor win the days competition, he also got a "2" on the par three
12th hole, giving him a share of the 2's. I say a share because
for the 1st time ever, a birdie was achieved by this years rookie
Lynden Bartlam, who also got a 2 on the 12th! Well done Lynden who
also scored an impressive 30 points. The general scores were indeed
quite high, Coops got 36, Dennis McKernon got 35, Rob Hughes 34.
But for once, there was no mention of Jo McKernon! Jo had a bit
of a nightmare, nearly taking the ankles off her playmates several
times on the 10th. Making up for it and keeping up their supply
of golf balls was hubby Dennis McKernon who got nearest the pin
on both the 4th and 15th holes! Guest winner this week was Mike
Turner playing off 20, who narrowly beat Gary Charnock by a couple
of points. Gary had the last laugh though because he'd picked Egor
in the sweepstake and won 50 euro!
Matchplays
are drawing to a close now, already in the final of the main competition
is Tony Fawcett, beating Dennis May 2 & 1, Tony will face the
winner of me and Jo McKernon which we are playing this Tuesday.
5 handicapper, Steve Bennett’s had an easy ride in the plate
competition, with 2 byes taking him to the semi-finals facing Andy
Knapman. Andy, will be no pushover though, unless he’s too
busy with his work as a swimming pool constructor. Unfortunately
for us, Andy’s reputation as the best on the island for building
pools means that he’s always inundated with work!
Don’t forget our
next event is Tuesday, 8th November. Tee times
are from 10.30 am followed by games on Sunday 13th
and Tuesday 22nd November.
