Corralejo Golf Society, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands

As fate would have it, on a blind draw on what was potentially our vice presidents last game with the society, all 3 members of the committee were all drawn together along with Dennis "The Menace" McKernon for our 9th Stableford competition of the year. As most people already know, Phil Richards, our vice president and one of the founder members of the society, is moving back to the UK next week to take his Neil Diamond tribute show to audiences around Britain. Phil, along with girlfriend Tina, has promised to still come and visit us over here from time to time, but depending on availability of flights, Tuesday 26th April was going to be his last game with the society for a while. A few more familiar faces joined us again after a long while, Gordon Clemens, and Annie Streams. Gordon has been very busy of late and Annie broke her wrist last year which put her out of action for a while. The sun was beating down and there was only a slight westerly wind to keep us cool. One of my playing partners, Dennis McKernon got off to cracking start by parring the 1st. And his luck continued from there getting just 100 yards from the pin on his 2nd shot on the 2nd hole, Dennis took a 9 iron with the intention of lobbing it up in the air to land on the green, however, he caught it somewhat thin and launched it a 100 mph towards McDonalds! He did though hit it on target, and after just a single bounce just off the green, the ball dived straight into hole for a birdie!!! I don't know who was more surprised, me or him! By the end of the 4th hole, Dennis already had 10 points but after being jinxed with comments from Phil and Derek, he went off the boil a little. His partner in crime, Jo McKernon was also having a good time of it a few groups behind. Jo who was playing off 11 has the lowest eclectic score so far this year, with 7 birdie's and 11 pars, and on this occasion birdied 2 other holes to bring her eclectic round to 61! The details of these and all our other competitions are posted on the Leaderboard page where you can find the up to date state of play on all our competitions.

Winner Jo McKernon and Runner-up Paul Benham

Apart from getting 2 birdies, Jo shot a round of 80 giving her 37 points and her 1st victory of the year. Jo has now been cut to a 9 handicap, and as from now will only be cut by 1 shot should she win again. Coming in 2nd with a score of 36 points off a 21 handicap was Paul Benham. Paul came 2nd in our last competition and will now be playing off 20. Our guest winner this week was Trevor Pugsley, who got 29 points off a handicap of 19. Trevor also got nearest the pin on the par three 7th, and despite an easy pin position at the front of the green, no one got on the green in one for nearest the pin on the 15th. Another hero of the day was Steve Cordings from Chablis Wine bar in Corralejo, he got birdie "2" on the 4th hole winning himself 44 Euro in cash (but don't tell Trish!). The lucky person to pick the winner on the sweepstake was Joan Roaden, who has a jewellery stall in Corralejo's Monday and Friday market.

Steve 'birdie' Cordings and Guest Winner Trevor Pugsley

It only remains for me to say that on behalf of all in the Corralejo Golf Society, and I'm sure anyone else who know them, very good luck to Phil and to Tina, who has also been a great help to the society, and we wish you all the best in whatever you do and don't forget to visit.

Don’t forget our next event is a better ball competition held on Tuesday, 10th May. Tee times are from 10.40 am followed by a Stableford competition on Sunday 15th May.
