Yet again the records have been broken with our biggest
turnout to date, even with 2 of our members unable to get there
in time due to being delayed in the notary. At one point there was
40 going to play, which ended up being 35 actually playing on the
event due to notary's, injuries etc! Still the best turnout we've
had so far, 28 members and 7 guests. The society in growing all
the time and with the introduction of a second course as from November,
no doubt we will go from strength to strength. We have already negotiated
a great deal with both courses for next year and are adding some
extra dates to our event list. More details to follow on the next
report after I finalize the finer points and play the new course
next week.
Back to the day in question, Tuesday 26th September.
Everything went smoothly getting everyone organised to play off
both the 1st and 10th tees to enable us to finish within a reasonable
time of each other. I had an unexpected visitor this week turn up
at the bar, a mate I hadn't seen for over 9 years. Coming all the
way from Almeria in the south of Spain, where I first worked when
I moved to Spain, Steve Collins just waltzed down the steps into
the bar as if I'd seen him just yesterday! There are many stories
I could tell you about me and Steve from 16 years ago, but I don't
think they would get published! Anyway, golf is what we're on about
and it turns out Steve has golfed for many years, so he came along
as my guest, joined by Derek Mac & Coops to make up our 4.

We had a fabulous day and
some reasonable golf was played too. Me and Coops started off neck
and neck parring 3 of the first 4 holes, it did slide a little after
that but we had a pretty good knock between us all. It has to be
said it didn’t start off too windy, but the wind did pick
up throughout the day. My putting was as hot as the weather on the
day, but they were all staying within a few inches of the hole,
none of them quite going in. But it was one of those days where
it just didn’t matter, we were having a nice day in good company.
The only putt that did get to me a little was the last putt on the
last hole, just a 4 foot putt for par to finish the round with 36
points and play to my handicap. I hadn’t missed anything from
under 10 feet all day until the one that really mattered! So 35
points was not enough to win, but I was happy enough with joint
4th place with Margot Kenny and John Burgess. In 3rd place with
36 points, (should have been me!) was Vince price. Back after being
away since June, and I think he’s been practising too, was
Mike Turner who came in 2nd place with 38 points. Our winner on
the day, a long time overdue, with a whopping 39 points with 2 blobs
was Steed Ansell. This brings Steed down to a 17 handicap. Steed
had extra pressure on him in the comp as well because he had picked
himself out on the sweepstake, but it didn’t seem to bother
as he indeed scored the highest on the day and won the 50 euro sweep!
In our guest competition it ended in a card play-off between Stan
Knox and Wayne Gleed who both scored 28 points. Wayne narrowly beat
Stan on the back 9 by 1 point to therefore take glory as guest winner.

As
we were starting from the 1st and 10th tees, we put the nearest
the pins on the front 9 on holes 4 & 7. Getting nearest on the
4th was Coops and Paul Benham was nearest on the 7th. Yet again
no one managed to get a “2” so it’s another rollover
for our next game.
Don’t forget our next event is Tuesday
10th October. Tee times are from 10.00 am followed by Sunday
15th and Tuesday 24th October tees times
are also from 10am.
