Yet again, this event was a quiet affair for the society, a few last minute comings and goings due to injury and family visits meant we were in small numbers, but it's quality, not quantity that counts and everyone enjoyed a great day out, with some pretty good golf played along the way.
Playing a better ball format in teams of 2, we set off in four balls on scorching September morn (pardon the pun if your reading Phil Richards!) We had some old familiar faces joining us for the day, Ray Messenger who has Stables Bar in Corralejo, Phil Edgington who played with us nearly 3 years ago and Stan Knox on his 2nd visit this year to the island. Stan was partnering Steve Cordings from Chablis wine bar in Corralejo, and my partner was Gordon Clemens who despite not having played much this year, pulled out all the stops for our team. All you can do in any event like this, is to try and keep up with or in front of you playing partners. This proved to be a mean feat with Stan and Steve. In a better ball comp, you can only hope that if you have a bad hole, your partner comes through to score for the team and together accumulate a good score. Well, individually, I scored 31 points, with no score on 2 holes, my partner Gordon, scored 39 points, scoring on all holes. Our combined score came to 44 points.

But this wasn't
enough to match the winners of the day, Steve and Stan who scored
individually scored only 27 and 31, but combined scored 46 points!
This is a perfect example of how better ball works, it's all down
to how you and your partner compliment each other on the day. Gordon
was gutted after having scored such a good score on his own. The
others teams were all within 7 shots of the winners, which means
there was some good golf played on the day. Nearest the pins were
won by Tony Fawcett on the 4th, and Dennis May on the 15th. Our
2's comp was a rollover from last week and as if he hadn't won enough
on the day, Stan Knox got a birdie on the par three 7th and to add
insult to injury, Steve Cordings had picked his partner Stan in
the sweepstake and won a share of the sweep too along with Ray from
Stables! What a day!
