The weather has been picking up here recently, however
forces from up above had other ideas for Tuesday 28th February!
One minute it was bucketing down, the next it was bright sunshine.
It looked like this was going to happen for most of the day, but
with the exception of 1 or 2, contrary to common belief, we are
not fair weather golfers here in Fuerteventura, 24 players braved
the elements and were very glad they did too! Although the outlook
was bleak, it was only maybe the first hour where the 3-minute downpours
occurred, the rest of the day gradually got better until we ended
up getting sunburnt! The wind was the one thing that was consistent
on the day, extremely strong winds were coming in from the south-west,
from the Atlantic, an unusual direction for the island.
Although an unusual wind direction, it did help on some
holes as the prevailing wind normally makes some par 4’s almost
impossible to for us mortals to reach in 2. The only difficulty
was club selection and getting the ball to stop with the wind behind.
Even on the greens a delicate touch was all that was needed on down
wind putt.

Amongst the days' field were 3 new members, Mike Turner, who has played as a guest in the latter half of last year, as well Vincent Price and Eva Krivacska who have now joined the ranks. Incidentally, it's not the Vincent Price who has joined us! We would like to wish a warm welcome to our new members. We also had some regular guests playing with us, Di Raeside, a friend of Annie Streams and Dennis McKernons son Craig and his girlfriend Dawn, an 11 handicapper, were amongst the guests joining us for the day.

The elements didn't dampen our spirits, if anything
you couldn't help but laugh at us mad dogs and Englishmen leaning
into the wind walking down the fairway! Annie Streams regularly
looked like Mary Poppins when her umbrella was up! Surprisingly,
although lower than normal, the scores were not too bad, with a
tie for 3rd with 32 points from new member Vincent Price
and Terry Blood, what a pair! In 2nd place was
Irishman Dermott Haughian with 33 points playing off a 9 handicap,
but the winner of the day, getting cut a shot to 17, was yours truly
with 36! My putting saved me mostly, at the start of the round,
I couldn't hit a ball to save my life! Nearest the pins were won
by Coops on the 7th and Kevin Parker on the 15th. The sweepstake
was won by Di Raeside who didn't even know she'd picked me in the
sweep! Di also won the guest prize of the day with 32 points off
a 20 handicap, a good day for her. Not surprisingly, no one got
a 2 on the day, though Coops says he was only centimetres away on
one hole. This means that it's a rollover for our Captains Cup day
on the 14th March in honour of this years' captain, Rob Hughes from
our adopted clubhouse, the Kings Arms in Caleta. He has lots of
extra things lined up for the golf in the day as well as a few surprises
for the evening presentation.
Don't forget
our next event is the Captains Cup on Tuesday,
14th March. Tee times are from 10.00 am followed by games
on Sunday 19th & Tuesday 28th March.
