Although there at least
5 of our regular players away, we still had a good turnout for our
competition on the 29th. It was a beautiful sunny day but the wind
was a blowin’! As our normal event starter Tina was back in
England for a break, it was left to myself and Jo McKernon to get
everyone organised for our 7th Stableford competition of the year.
We had, as usual, our 2’s competition for a birdie on a par
3, which was rolled over from our last event offering a prize of
80 euro! Yet again no one managed a birdie, although I’m led
to believe there was a near miss or two! Also rolled over from our
Captains Cup day, was the 50 Euro prize for a birdie on the par
five, 17th hole. This was one of the prizes offered by John Birch
for the Captains Cup on the 15th that no one won on the day. It
was nearly won in style by getting an eagle (although not a birdie,
I’m sure it would have counted!) by country member Daniel
Reeve, a 16-year-old whizz-kid playing off an impressive handicap
of 12. He was only a foot and a half away from getting an eagle,
which would have also earned him free membership for next year!
As he wasn’t here for the cup day, he was unaware of this
prize, and so as not to put pressure on him for the putt, I waited
until after the game to tell him, much to the delight of caddy and
father, John who was after 10% share of his winnings!!

After winning
the Captains Cup and having my handicap cut by 2, I thought it was
time that I had a few pointers to improve my game. So I booked a
lesson with one of the course PGA pro’s, Simon. I must say
he really helped me and would thoroughly recommend anyone looking
for guidance in their game to have a lesson with him. It certainly
worked for me because, after one practice game in the week, I managed
to equal my best round ever, and come off with 40 points off 24,
just pipping last years Captain, Dave Cooper who got 39 points,
for another victory (and another 2 shots off my handicap!) There
was a 4 way tie for 3rd, with Daniel Reeve, Dennis May, Dennis McKernon
and Jo McKernon all coming off with 32 points. Guest winner this
week was one of our regulars Mike Minihayne, who scored 32 points.
Nearest the pins were won by guest winner, Mike Minihayne on the
par three 7th, and another guest, Graham O’Sullivan was closest
on the 15th. The lucky person to win the 50 euro sweepstake was
Paul Worrall, otherwise known as Egor from Stables bar in Corralejo.
