Tuesday 30th March was a very odd day for the society ending
in one of the lowest scoring games of the year. We also had some
guests who were on holiday joining us for the day, which meant we
had quite a mixed bunch with varied handicaps.
The winning score was quite impressive from Stuart Page,
but quite away behind was second and third places. A completely
different story to the previous weeks, the likes of Phil Richards
and Derek Mac and a few others have been playing exceptionally well
of late, but on this occasion were beaten by one of our rookies
Pepe Suarez!! Pepe also won the “2´s” competition
for getting a birdie on the 12th, a par 3, he´s still not
even managed to par a hole yet!!! Very well done Pepe.
Getting shots back for
this week was our president, Derek Mac, now off 20, and Ted Hewlett,
still off 28.
On our Sunday Funday,
11/4/04, we played a Texas Scramble in teams of two. As usual a
great day was had by all, especially myself and my partner on the
day, Mike Scarlett! We had a fabulous front nine between us, ending
up just 2 over par. Our back nine wasn´t as good as the front,
but we finished up with a round of 80. After discounting 20% of
our combined handicap (10.6) we just beat the other half of our
four-ball, Andy & Elaine Knapman. They ended up with a round
of 81 less 10 shots for 20% of their combined handicaps. Scores
were also very close after that with just 1 shot separating 2nd
from 3rd. One of our guests who played with us on Sunday also played
with us last August, Daniel, a 15 year old wiz-kid from Leeds playing
off 18.
Yet again our membership numbers have grown, we welcome both Andy
& Elaine (hairbrain) Knapman, and Pete Thomas
who lives in Parque Holandes.
The course itself is being prepared for the Spanish
Open on April 22nd. Already you can notice an improvement on the
greens and fairways. There are some official PGA green keepers here
overseeing the work going on. The course was closed as from Tuesday
13th and re-opens to the public just in time for our next society
day, Tuesday April 27th.
2004 Canarian Spanish Open
There are lots of rumours
flying around about the Spanish Open being held here. It is the
Official PGA Spanish Open (the 2nd oldest European competition after
the British Open), which has been combined with the Canarian Open.
The prize fund will total just under 1.7 million euros, and the
competition lasts for four days. Entrance to the Open will be free
and there will be refreshment tents and toilets around the course
for the main days as entrance to the Hotel and facilities will be
limited to players and officials. Although entrance is free, a respectable
dress code is required, (not beach wear) as the event will be broadcast
to over 350 million viewers worldwide! Sky TV will be transmitting
live coverage of the event, and there are many locals helping out
so make sure to watch out for familiar faces or record it for posterity.
The run-down on events are as follows,
Tuesday 20th April - Practice day.
Wednesday 21st April – Pro-am
Thursday 22nd – Day 1 of the Spanish Open
Friday 23rd – Day 2 of the Spanish Open
Saturday 24th – Day 3 of the Spanish Open
Sunday 25th – Final day of the Spanish Open
