Tuesday 8th June was the
second of our major events of the year for the society. It was our
first sponsors’ day, sponsored by one of our members, Pepe
from La Sirena restaurant in Hoplaco Gardens in the center of Corralejo.
Everyone was gunning for the title of cup winner as well as the
fabulous prizes on offer donated by La Sirena. As well as the main
prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd, all four par 3’s were sponsored
for nearest the pin along with a nearest the pin in two on the par
9th. These prizes were donated by QFM radio 98fm, The Blue Rock,
Jive Bunny, myself and Tracy from Chablis Wine bar. We had our best
turnout of members on the day, with a total of 19 members, as well
as some guests joining us for the event.
As we were in large numbers we had pre-arranged with
Keith Sheppard (Director of Golf at Fuerteventura Golf Club) to
start off the 10th tee as well as the 1st. This meant we all finished
within a short time of each other. We had arranged a quick drink
and the presentation of the guest prize at the Kings Arms in Caleta
de Fuste. Our guest winner was Colin Chadburn from Nottingham, playing
off a handicap of 17. He came in with a great score of 31 points.
Colin also won the nearest the pin in two on the 9th hole. Nearest
the pin on the 4th was won by another guest, Gordon Gilhooley, whilst
the 7th was won by Alan Collier of Whispers bar in Corralejo. The
rest of the day, you could say was dominated by the overall winner.
After being unable to play until recently due to injury, our beloved
Simon Atherfold from the Blue Rock bar and Grapevine Magazine, romped
in with a whopping score of 35 points and won the nearest the pin
on both the 12th and 15th along with the 2’s competition too!
One of his playing partners, sponsor of the day, Pepe, puts Simons
win down to his expert advice and guidance! Personally, I just think
that Simon played a blinder and deserved to win the day.
Getting a shot back this week was Andy Knapman, now playing off
19, he’d had a busy week finishing off constructing a swimming
pool so that he could play on the day. I know how feels from my
efforts last year!!!!

The evening presentation
meal at 'La Sirena' restaurant
|
After
we had all got showered and changed and made ourselves look beautiful
(or as best we could Egor!), we met up at Chablis Wine Bar in the
main street of Corralejo with our respective partners, wives and girlfriends,
the golf widows as they are commonly known. We had a few complimentary
drinks on the golf society, and then made our way over to La Sirena
restaurant, just across the road where our host, Pepe greeted us.
Pepe and his staff did an excellent job of catering to our every whim,
serving us lots of aperitifs, vinos, drinks and a beautiful meal. |
Then
came the presentation and speeches. By now most people knew who had
won the day but didn’t know the other placings. After a short
speech from our President, Derek Mac, Dave Cooper (Society Captain
2004) took over to announce the winners,
starting off with the nearest the pin winners and then in reverse
order, the winners of the game itself. Third place winner was Dave
Hill, winning himself a meal for two at La Sirena, and then in second
place came Gordon Clemens, winning himself a wine rack full of quality
wines, reservas and champagne. Then, with rapturous applause, the
winner of 2004 “La Sirena Cup” was officially announced
to be Simon Atherfold, winning himself an all expenses paid trip for
2 on the Catlanza Catamaran, an embroidered Corralejo Golf Society
winners shirt, the big engraved Sirena Cup and a place in the history
books! |
A
great evening was had by all, and some of us went on to Ron’s
Alfa 2 bar, where we sang a few songs and continued to celebrate
Simons win. The rest is bit of a blur for me, I´m still being
filled in with some of the details of the night, apologies to anyone
I might have attempted to speak to!! I did pay my penance the next
day.
