Hi folks,
Sorry it’s been a while, I’ve been on my
jollies to the UK! 9 out of the ten days I was there were sunny!
Not bad for November, even managed to get 5 and half rounds of golf
in wearing just a polo for most of them. One of the games I had
was with our ex-vice president, Phil Richards, we had a round at
Southport Municipal golf course. For those who know Phil, he’s
doing pretty well, enjoying the delights of the Great British countryside
with Tina, whilst warbling the odd Neil Diamond song every now and
again! Also whilst in the UK, I visited Monkey World with friends
from Dorset where one of the chimps, Patricia, a former resident
of Corralejo now resides. Patricia was rescued in June from a villa
in Corralejo, and in such a short space of time, after never even
seeing another chimp in her life, has integrated and become a big
part of one of the groups of chimps. And before anyone thinks or
says it, yes, I did manage to escape capture myself! Another adventure
I had on my holidays was to take to the skies in a helicopter and
plane. High Wycombe was the venue for an hour flying lesson in both
helicopter and fixed wing Cessna 152. Having a helicopter practice
at the same time as my lesson was none other than Del Boy himself,
Sir David Jason, who has recently got his licence and was topping
up his hours. As you can gather with all these things going on and
1100 miles covered in 10 days, it was hardly a restful holiday,
but a welcome break.
Anyway, to the golf! The 1st
event to report on was on the day before my hols, a Tuesday better
ball competition. After the usual last minute comings and goings
we ended up with a nice round 20, equating to 10 teams of 2. As
well as the better ball, due to unfortunate circumstances, my semi-final
match play game against Jo McKernon had to be played along side
the other comp, not ideal by any means. The outcome was that Jo
beat me on the 16th hole, and will now face Tony Fawcett in the
final to be held on Tuesday 29th November. I will play Dennis May
in the play-off for 3rd place and final of the plate competition
is between Paul Worrall and Andy Knapman.
The results of the better
ball competition were as follows, 6 of the 10 teams were all within
4 shots of each other, but one team stood out by a mile, 8 shots
in front of 2nd place to be exact, Dennis May and Peter Flynn. Both
have been playing pretty well lately and on this occasion they complimented
each other perfectly, individually they scored 36 & 34 but combined
they scored a total of 47, which is what better ball is all about,
if one doesn’t score on the hole, the partner does.
I wasn’t here for
the Sunday Stableford comp on the 13th, so there isn’t much
I can say about it other than what I know from the scorecards and
word of mouth. It was by all accounts, a record-breaking day, the
members were actually out-numbered by the guests! Sundays generally
tend to be quieter than our Tuesdays, and this time there were only
8 members playing, thankfully 9 guests made up the numbers. Good
news for Jo McKernon, as I was away on holiday it was a good chance
to make an impact on the player of the year stats, she only had
to beat off 7 other members for a chance to improve on her score.
And she did take full advantage, though not having the highest score
of the day, she did score 36 points enough for her to win the members
comp and bring her player of the year score level with mine!
This
means that it’s all down to the last game of the season, the
Presidents Cup on December 6th. Both myself and Jo have to be in the
top 3 to make a difference to our years’ best ten finishes in
order to win the player of the year. For those who don’t know,
on each Stableford game of the season, the winner gets 30 points for
the player of the year comp, 2nd gets 29, 3rd 28 etc. The player of
the year is the one has had the best ten finishes in that season.
i.e. both myself and Jo have won 4 games, come 2nd twice and 3rd and
4th twice, accumulating a score of 288 out of a possible 300 (10 wins
@ 30 points per win). The highest score of the day was made by our
guest winner and soon to become member, Peter Flynn scoring 38 points.
Although he is still a guest, as he is playing regularly with the
society on this course, his handicap has been adjusted accordingly
dropping him 2 shots to 25!
Tuesday November 22nd saw
the return of some familiar faces, Dermott Haughian, Alan Wrigley,
Margot Kenny to name but a few. Along with 7 guests, our 15 members
set out on a, for once, not too windy a day. The weather wasn’t
reflected in most scores except for that of the top 4. Gordon Clemens
had a good knock scoring 34, 21 of them on the back 9, and Dennis
May who has been finding his form since our Gran Canaria trip in
July came in 3rd with 37 points narrowly escaping a cut of his handicap.
In second place playing off a handicap of 11 and scoring an impressive
38 points was Dermott Haughian, Dermott was cut 1 shot to 10.
Our long time overdue
winner was none other than last years Captain, Dave Cooper! Coops
scored 39 points and earned himself a well-deserved cut of 2 off
his handicap. I played with Coops on the day and he did play well.
Nearest the pins were won by Rob Hughes on the 4th and as usual,
Jo McKernon on the 15th! The 2's comp was won by another of my playing
partners, 28 handicapper and rapidly improving, Lynden Bartlam.
He got a birdie on the 4th, putting in from the edge of the green
in spectacular fashion! Not an easy putt by any means. I think his
names going to be mentioned quite a bit in the year to come. Lucky
winner of the sweep was none other than our President, Derek Mac,
I'm sure the money will come in handy as he's sponsoring the cup
day next Tuesday! Guest winner of the day, yet again was Peter Flynn,
this time though he only scored 31 points, so won't be cut on this
occasion!
We’ve reached the
end of our individual match play competition. The final and play-off
for 3rd place were played on Tuesday, the day after Tropical Storm
Delta. Only 5 mph short of a hurricane title, the storm caused some
damage to things on the island. The golf course lost 70 trees in
total, some uprooted, tops blown off palms and some just snapped
in the middle. Thankfully, only 1 person died on Fuerteventura from
the storm, an elderly gentleman who decided to go up to his roof
to see how windy it was! It was an unusual phenomenon for this part
of the world, it’s not normal to have such extreme weather
in the Canaries. It was still pretty blowy on the Tuesday, and the
odd bit of rain too, but not enough to deter us from playing. My
play off for 3rd place with Dennis May started off fairly even,
I’d win a hole, then he’d win one, until the 6th where
things started to fall apart for me. By the 11th hole, I was 6 down
with only 8 to play! But after birdying the 11th a pulled a few
back and eventually lost on the 15th hole, 4 & 3. When we’d
finished our round I went to find out how the final had gone on
between Tony Fawcett and Jo McKernon only to find that they had
finished their game before ours! Tony beat Jo 6 & 5 winning
him the coveted title of Corralejo Golf Society Match Play winner
2005. The plate trophy final is being played next Tuesday on the
presidents’ cup day, as Andy Knapman and Egor are both busy
up until then.
Our AGM has been arranged for Tuesday 13th December at 4pm, to be
held at the Kings Arms in Caleta, where we’ll discuss new
ideas and forthcoming events of the year to come. Any ideas or suggestions
can be emailed
to me and will be presented at the AGM for those who can’t
make the meeting.
Apart from our Presidents
Cup Day on Tuesday 6th December, we also
have a Sunday fun comp on the 11th and our Christmas
Special golf day on the 20th.
